Lately I have been working on some research, getting it typed up in Scrivener and allowing inspiration to flow as it comes. But I’ve been taking some time away from my desk to work on the desktop via the laptop. It allows me to sit where it works better for me at the time at home while still getting the work done. Also, it puts less work on my laptop battery since the desktop is doing all the work.
Anyway.
Because I’ve been on the laptop, I’ve been using the laptop keyboard. A typical laptop keyboard. I think it’s a little more heavy-duty than a standard laptop keyboard, but pretty close. Today, I’ve been back at my desk and it reminded me why I love working at my desk: my mechanical keyboard.
Years ago I read something extolling the virtues of the mechanical keyboard for uses other than gaming. Mechanical keyboards used to be the standard. They’re heavy. They’re noisy. And they seem to have become the go-to for gamers. The keys use switches instead of the membrane that most keyboards use now, which really changes how they work. The more you use a mechanical keyboard, the less you find yourself having to press down on a key to use it. They are much more sensitive. This means you are putting less strain on your hands, and you can type faster and more accurately than with other keyboards.
After reading all of that, I knew I needed to get one. I went over to MicroCenter (really great computer store if you have one near you) and found a SteelSeries keyboard that was not expensive and full of all sorts of extras (like lighting up) that I didn’t need. It looks like they don’t make it anymore, or I’d post a link. I love this keyboard. Every time I spend a lot of time typing on the laptop, like I have been recently, and come back to the keyboard, I feel the difference.
Like recently I noticed that I was missing L a lot while working on the laptop. I haven’t had that problem on the keyboard. I guess I’ve gotten so used to the lighter work of the keyboard that it’s affecting my typing on the laptop. Another thing I like is the keyboard has those nice tall keys that even desktop laptops don’t commonly have anymore.
As someone who is doing a lot of writing, and will be doing more in the future, I am so glad I bought this keyboard. It feels so much better and I am more productive with it. Anything to help my productivity is a win for me!
